Twitter has revealed some more details about its advertising plan. You can read the full story at the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things Digital” blog.
Twitter says that there are still lots of details to work out. But at a quick glance it looks a lot like Google’s ad plan. Ads show up in searches. (Only searches, not a user’s main Twitter feed.) Search for “laptop,” and you might see a Dell ad, to use WSJ’s example.
So how does this advertising model affect brands that are active in the new media arena? Right now I think there’s a pro and a con to this system. Read the rest of this entry »

The Winter 2010 Knoxville Social Media Summit on Feb. 24 was a great event presented by the Knoxville Social Media Association and sponsored by the Knoxville News Sentinel and Metro Pulse that included a packed room at the S&W Grand, great insight from the panelists and some serious brainpower.
Three panels dealt with social media and issues in health care, journalism and business. Comments from attendees can be seen on Twitter by searching for #knoxsummit. Read the rest of this entry »

Traditional media outlets are tried, true and trusted by the public as sources for important information. Working with reporters should be a key part of any healthy public relations campaign. Another key part of a well-planned pubic relations initiative is your online presence. This includes your Web site and also new media tools like blogs, Facebook and Twitter. Working together, these are very effective communication tools to help you deliver your messages to your audience. Read the rest of this entry »

To be fair I have to disclose I’ve been using Twitter since the summer of 2007 and Foursquare for about two weeks. Is it fair to compare the two? Well, sure it is. Read the rest of this entry »

Moxley Carmichael creative director Charley Sexton and I attended the SocialFresh Nashville conference on Jan. 11, 2010. The group of 270 attendees was friendly and fun to be around. The speakers were insightful and — more importantly — experienced. Big thanks to the Social Media Club of Nashville for volunteer staffing. You guys were helpful and on top of everything, even finding my missing nametag. And of course thanks to Jason Keath (Twitter, web) for being the big brain behind SocialFresh. Several of us at Moxley Carmichael decided to make some predictions for 2010. These are random at best and a bit eccentric. In other words, there’s something for everyone!

Skype me
I sat down in my kitchen in Knoxville this morning and spoke to my son face-to-face – as he was in Prague. Skype has been a wonderful communication tool while he has been studying abroad this semester. A fabulously inexpensive (free, actually) way to keep in personal contact with one another. I predict that this technology will become an important feature on mobile devices, keeping families close in years to come. Read the rest of this entry »

Mobile design
Designing for mobile devices will play a larger part in online design. Up until now it has been the top tier Web sites that are formatted for mobile devices. We’ll see this climb the Web-development priority ladder as mobile browsing increases and the technology to auto-format Web sites for mobile devices becomes more common. Read the rest of this entry »

I love online videos – and there are a lot for me to love. Watching missed episodes of “The Office” on Hulu. Finding funny clips on YouTube. Getting a dose of “you’re-nowhere-near-as-smart-as-these-people” on TED. Lots to find and enjoy.
Magma makes all that video content much more manageable. Developed by Rocketboom, Magma pulls videos from all over the Web (YouTube, Hulu, etc.) and organizes them any way you want to slice it. The column-based interface is clean, and the most impressive part is the organization of all that constantly changing video content. The site also ranks the videos on a popularity scale of 1-11 so you can jump to what’s hot. Read the rest of this entry »
