At Moxley Carmichael we love to keep our finger on the online pulse. Through monitoring new media trends and topics we find tons of great info to apply in the communications industry.
One recent opportunity was the first #ufprchat on Twitter, which connected University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications students, faculty and alumni interested in discussing social media trends.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from UF in 2007. At that time, Facebook was for college affiliates only. I had never heard the word “Twitter” – in a classroom or at all. Read the rest of this entry »

Twitter has revealed some more details about its advertising plan. You can read the full story at the Wall Street Journal’s “All Things Digital” blog.
Twitter says that there are still lots of details to work out. But at a quick glance it looks a lot like Google’s ad plan. Ads show up in searches. (Only searches, not a user’s main Twitter feed.) Search for “laptop,” and you might see a Dell ad, to use WSJ’s example.

Traditional media outlets are tried, true and trusted by the public as sources for important information. Working with reporters should be a key part of any healthy public relations campaign. Another key part of a well-planned pubic relations initiative is your online presence. This includes your Web site and also new media tools like blogs, Facebook and Twitter. Moxley Carmichael creative director Charley Sexton and I attended the SocialFresh Nashville conference on Jan. 11, 2010. The group of 270 attendees was friendly and fun to be around. The speakers were insightful and — more importantly — experienced. Big thanks to the Social Media Club of Nashville for volunteer staffing. I sat down in my kitchen in Knoxville this morning and spoke to my son face-to-face – as he was in Prague. Skype has been a wonderful communication tool while he has been studying abroad this semester. A fabulously inexpensive (free, actually) way to keep in personal contact with one another. I love online videos – and there are a lot for me to love. Watching missed episodes of “The Office” on Hulu. Finding funny clips on YouTube. Getting a dose of “you’re-nowhere-near-as-smart-as-these-people” on TED. Lots to find and enjoy.
Magma makes all that video content much more manageable. Developed by Rocketboom, Magma pulls videos from all over the Web (YouTube, Hulu, etc.) and organizes them any way you want to slice it. The column-based interface is clean, and the most impressive part is the organization of all that constantly changing video content. The site also ranks the videos on a popularity scale of 1-11 so you can jump to what’s hot. Read the rest of this entry »
